Min, an international student facing the expiration of his student visa and pressure to take over the family business, has a boyfriend, Chris, who is afraid of marriage. Chris′s longtime friend, Angela, is contemplating the future with her girlfriend, Lee, who wants to have a child through expensive IVF treatments. What could be the easiest way to solve the tricky problems this gay couple and lesbian couple are facing? The Wedding Banquet is a remake of Ang Lee′s eponymous romantic comedy, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1993. With the change in the times, the film focuses more on the personal relationships and conflicts between family, lovers, and friends rather than on the struggle against conservative social norms. The script, adapted by the original screenwriter James Schamus along with director Andrew Ahn, is further illuminated by the solid performances of a star-studded cast including Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-Chan, Youn Yuh-Jung, and Joan Chen.
