Dreams is the ninth film from Mexican cineaste Michel Franco, who has relentlessly reshaped and reexamined themes of class, control and oppression, and love and death throughout his previous works. Fernando, a Mexican man who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, believes in love as he illegally crosses the border into the United States. However, his lover Jennifer, an upper-class American woman, tries to manage and control the situation by keeping him at a careful distance. The subtle emotions of love between the two characters, teetering on the edge of dependence and charity, gradually distort under the weight of class and reality, eventually reaching a breaking point and meeting a chilling catastrophe. Condensing the issues of immigration, race, and class into the intimate relationship between a man and a woman, the film shows how structural inequality manifests in the most personal of spaces. It keenly exposes the class hierarchy and the process of unconscious domination packaged in the word ‘love.’
