To feed his wife and child, Randy camps illegally in the Zapata swamps and catches crocodiles with his bare hands. The radio keeps reporting on the pandemic, with hundreds of new deaths every day, while conditions in Cuba grow ever harsher. On the shore, his wife Mercedes scavenges for charcoal to cook with and cares for their severely autistic son. As the days pass she grows restless: Randy should have been back long ago, but there is no word from him, and she does not dare to voice her fears. At last Randy returns with food for the family, only to head back to the swamp soon after. And so the family lives on, in an endless cycle of hunger and uncertainty.
