Dutch-Afghan filmmaker Dawood Hilmandi sets out on a perilous inner journey. Travelling through Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, he opens up to his ageing father, an imam haunted by the past, whose deepest wounds are bound up with the family's hurried flight from a war zone. Retracing their old escape route, Dawood finds this cross-border pilgrimage turning into an inner struggle as he tries to make peace with his identity and faith and confront trauma, wounds passed between generations that come not only from conflict outside but also from within the family. This sincere and finely felt story touches on the complexities of identity, displacement and the bond between father and son.
