The 8th edition, jointly hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism and the China Academy of Art, is set to take place from October 23 to 25 in Hangzhou, China, featuring five main programs: the IDF Competition, Glory of Documentary Screening Section, IDF Forum, IDF Pitching, and IDF Academy. Chinese and international filmmakers, production companies, distributors, cultural scholars, and media professionals are invited to celebrate the art of documentary by the West Lake.
The key visual identity of the 8th West Lake International Documentary Festival explores the theme of "Un · coming."The prefix "un-" denotes negation. Time itself negates the possibility of capturing what has not yet happened on camera. And yet, every second of filming reaches towards what is about to happen. Filmmaking is, in this sense, an act of anticipation, an expression of faith in the unknown. This human endeavor is, of course, somewhat presumptuous: how can we know what will be worth seeing in the future?Perhaps the act of "coming" counters the presumption. This first-person, present-tense gesture champions the courage to keep walking. This year, we have chosen "Un · coming" as the annual theme because we believe that documentary is more than an archive of the past; it offers a glimpse into the coming moment. Every shot captured by documentary filmmakers who are physically present should bring them closer to themselves as well as to their audiences, and become an image worth viewing in the future
