An adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s eponymous memoire, The Chronology of Water marks Kristen Stewart’s ambitious feature directorial debut after a series of short films. Retracing Lidia’s life marked by childhood sexual abuse and violence, The Chronology of Water stands out for its experimental form, departing from a linear narrative structure. Once a competitive swimmer, Lidia’s turbulent life journey is boldly reimagined through cinematic devices such as the fluidity of water, poetic narration, layered soundscapes, and abstract montages. Refusing to objectify a woman who fought to protect herself amid the tragedies that sought to crush her, the film instead plunges into her life with full solidarity and support—a bold cinematic manifesto. The film heralds the arrival of Kristen Stewart as a talented filmmaker.
