A live-action adaptation of Shinkai Makoto’s 2007 animated film of the same name. This film stays faithful to the original while embracing the language of cinematic framing, weaving together a sense of familiarity and freshness with graceful sensitivity. Matsumura Hokuto, who appeared in All the Long Nights (2024), plays Takaki, a man still clinging to memories of his first love from childhood. Spanning from the early 1990s—before the advent of social media—to 2009, the film vividly captures the tender emotions of first love and the pure, wistful gestures of a young man and woman who carry those memories as part of themselves. 5 Centimeters Per Second lyrically conveys the textures of pastoral landscapes, imprinting anew the sensibilities of a bygone era that flowed more slowly, yet more beautifully, than today.
