In a small village, old woman Ayimkhan, backbone of her family, lives with her son, Samat; his wife, Gulzhan; and their 8-year-old daughter, Umit. Ayimkhan supports the family through her pension, labor, and devoted care. However, Gulzhan, who has grown tired of rural life, wants to move to the city; one day she finally leaves home. The burden of housework and caring for her granddaughter falls on Ayimkhan's shoulders alone. Daily life flows quietly, apparently unchanged, yet within it, the family is falling apart. Shyrmauyq, debut film by Almaty-born 43-year-old Azamat Shargyn, portrays this through serene imagery.
Born in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1983. Azamat Shargyn graduated from the T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts in 2007 with a degree in Musical Theatre and Film Acting, and in 2020 earned a second degree in Film Directing.
