In a seaside village in Malaysia, Ali and Amir are fraternal twins so close they can almost communicate telepathically. Their mother has passed away, and their father, far from caring for them, only thinks of how to exploit them. Frequently bullied by their schoolmates, Ali and Amir find in each other their only source of strength and joy. Then one day, a beautiful new English teacher, Lara, arrives, and the two brothers′ relationship enters a new phase. The Fox King is directed by Malaysian director Woo Ming Jin, who won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Locarno Film Festival for Stone Turtle (2022). Indonesian superstar Dian Sastrowardoyo plays the enchanting yet mysterious Lara, heightening the film’s immersive atmosphere. The feverish emotional turmoil and growing pains of adolescence—sibling rivalry and jealousy, the agony of a first love one cannot possess, and a sense of guilt over a loss—are depicted amidst the heat of the tropical south.
