On January 29, 2024, a shocking incident in Gaza was turned into a film. Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl, was fleeing by car with her relatives when Israeli forces attacked them. As the sole survivor in the vehicle, Hind barely managed to connect with the Palestinian Red Crescent (the Islamic counterpart to the Red Cross) call center. From that moment on, Omar and his colleagues at the Red Crescent devoted themselves to rescuing the little girl. Director Kaouther Ben Hania, known for docu-fiction Four Daughters (2023) which recreated the tragedy of a Tunisian family, reconstructs here the harrowing events that befell the bright, hopeful little girl. While Olfa and her children in Four Daughters explore how a family moves toward healing through the medium of film, The Voice of Hind Rajab conveys the pain of unspeakable grief in a way that does not consume or exploit the suffering of others. This devastation does not dissipate when the film ends—for the massacre in Gaza continues to this day.
