A tale of two men who attempt to turn the upheaval of war to their own profit, and the wives who fall victim to their husbands' ambitions. Adapted from the supernatural tales of Ueda Akinari, the film conjures a mysterious and ethereal world through cinematographer Miyagawa Kazuo's sensuous camera movements. Ugetsu won the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival (following The Life of Oharu's success there the previous year) and was named the year's top film by "Cahiers du cinéma," thereby further cementing Mizoguchi's international reputation.
