Starting from Zhuang Wei's new film: she goes back to live in her unfamiliar Chaoshan hometown and meets her great-uncle A-Jun, who has returned from Cambodia. A-Jun brings his experience of surviving abroad back to his ancestral home, and with it carries a history tightly bound up with colour into the author's daily life. The film is in no hurry to pass judgement on history; it is more the record of a relationship. In coming to know A-Jun, Zhuang Wei tries to become a witness, while also witnessing how she herself grows up, gets tangled in confusion and keeps going. Her 'witness' is neither looking on nor merely seeing, but an active practice: by staying close, keeping company and returning again and again, experiences that were hard to speak of slowly settle into specific people and specific relationships.
