Bing'ai - IFFDAY

Official selection

An inconspicuous story among the million people relocated for the Three Gorges: Zhang Bing'ai, a farmer in the reservoir area whose husband is ill, carries the whole family alone; as relocation advances round after round and the villagers move away, the Zhangs become the "nail household" left on the riverbank. Filming alongside her for eight years, Feng Yan records the stubbornness and dignity of an ordinary woman facing her land, her family and her fate. Winner of the Ogawa Shinsuke Prize at Yamagata and the Silver Montgolfiere at the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes, it is a benchmark of Chinese-language documentary.
