Reflecting the social climate of the time as debate surrounding the enactment of the Prostitution Prevention Law intensified, Street of Shame is a star-studded ensemble drama portraying the lives of women, each with her own struggles, working at a brothel in Tokyo's Yoshiwara district. Mizoguchi began suffering from ill health during the film's production; despite starting preparations for his next project after its release, his condition failed to improve with treatment, and he passed away in August 1956. Street of Shame was his final film.
