Pedro Almodóvar is a Spanish director born in 1949, revered as one of the most celebrated figureheads of postmodern cinema in the 1980s and ′90s. Without any formal film education, he came up through writing, theater, music, photography, and Super 8 filmmaking before beginning his feature career in 1980. He made his debut with Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls Like Mom (1980), and has continued directing without pause ever since, winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film for All About My Mother (1999), Best Original Screenplay for Talk to Her (2002), and the Golden Lion at Venice for The Room Next Door (2024). His latest film, Bitter Christmas, screened in competition at this year′s Cannes Film Festival.
