The theme of this year’s newly established CROSSCUT ASIA+ section is “Side by Side.” From two perspectives—Southeast Asia as a region of neighboring countries, and cinematic time in which past and present exist side by side—the symposium reconsiders the “present position” of Southeast Asian cinema.
We welcome Bunga Siagian, the researcher who rediscovered the lost film Turang; Daniel Hui, director of Small Hours of the Night; and Daniel Mattes, producer of Becoming Human, to discuss how making, preserving, and screening films can question established narratives of history, open up possibilities for histories yet to be told, and create new conditions for cinema.
