Crafted in 1985 by Oshii Mamoru together with illustrator Amano Yoshitaka, Angel’s Egg is a silent apocalypse that defies plot summary. In a flooded city of ruins, a girl carrying a large egg encounters a young man with a cross-shaped weapon slung across his back. Fishermen chase nonexistent fish, a fossilized bird remains, and memories of the Ark linger. With dialogue stripped to a bare minimum, biblical symbols and haunting images fill the silence, awaiting each viewer’s own interpretation. Though originally released as an original video animation (OVA), the visual density of Angel’s Egg seemed destined for the big screen from the very beginning. Dismissed upon its release as impenetrably obscure, the film became a notorious failure, and Oshii himself later recalled that it left him without work for some time. Yet without this failure, the philosophical contemplation of Ghost in the Shell (1995) might never have existed. Like an egg that refuses to break, the film holds within it an enduring question: What is faith? To surrender completely to its images in the darkness of a theater is perhaps the only way to truly experience Angel’s Egg.
