Venice Out of CompetitionArt/Artist
Two octogenarian masters and icons of the New German Cinema bring their film to this year’s Venice Film Festival. It is also intriguing that Werner Herzog, who made a landmark 3D documentary, appears in this latest 3D documentary by Wim Wenders, produced by Brad Pitt. This documentary on Peter Zumthor, a master of contemporary architecture, visits 16 of his projects, including works still under construction and unfinished projects. Through Zumthor’s past and present reflections, it explores sources and origins, as well as philosophy, history, nature, poetry, and stories. Having previously made a 3D documentary about the two artists, Wenders expands his ‘immersive documentary’ to a larger spatial realm. This film is an experience of looking at, walking through, living in, and simply existing within space. Despite the privilege of being able to create space, Zumthor says, “Houses should be made by people. There is nothing more pleasurable than seeing traces left by people’s touch.” Like a project unfolding in a slow pace, he walks slowly through this documentary, and the audience cannot help but admire and grow fond of him.
Wim Wenders was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1945 and is a giant of contemporary German cinema, a leading figure of the New German Cinema movement of the 1970s. He made his feature debut with The Goalkeeper′s Fear of the Penalty Kick (1971), and has produced most of his work through Road Movies, the production company he founded in 1977. He won the Golden Lion at Venice for The State of Things (1982), the Palme d′Or at Cannes for Paris, Texas (1984), and the Best Director prize at Cannes for Wings of Desire (1987). From the 1990s onward, he also built a reputation as a documentarian, earning an Academy Award nomination for Buena Vista Social Club (1999), among others. Counting Pina (2011), a portrait of choreographer Pina Bausch, and The Salt of the Earth (2014), on photographer Sebastião Salgado, he has received a total of three Academy Award nominations for documentary filmmaking. Perfect Days (2023) proved the veteran director′s continuing vitality, winning the Best Actor prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes.
