The return of MEMORIES holds special significance. This three-part omnibus overseen by Otomoro Katsuhiro was first introduced to Korean audiences at the inaugural Busan International Film Festival in 1996 where it caused a sensation. MAGNETIC ROSE (Morimoto Koji), in which the crew of a space-debris salvage ship are consumed by illusions conjured from an opera singer′s memories, offers a blueprint for the world Kon Satoshi would later develop in Perfect Blue. STINK BOMB (Okamura Tensai), a farce about a salaryman who becomes a walking biochemical weapon after a laboratory accident, is a satire of modern civilization disguised as a black comedy. CANNON FODDER (Otomo Katushiro), depicting in a one-shot style a city where bombardment has become part of everyday life, brings the film to a weighty close. This screening presents the 30th-anniversary digital remaster released in 2025, offering a rare opportunity to experience together three short films that explore variations on a single theme—memory—through distinctly different genres and rhythms. A memory that began in Busan returns to Busan 30 years later, completing a perfect circle that only a film festival could bring about.
Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1954. He made his debut with the short manga A Gun Report (1973). His Domu (1980) made him the first manga artist to win the Japan SF Grand Prize. He later adapted Akira, serialized in Young Magazine, into the 1988 animated feature of the same name. With its meticulous direction and striking cyberpunk vision, the film became a worldwide sensation. His other major directorial works include MEMORIES and Steamboy (2004). He is currently working on a new Akira TV series.
