Seventeen-year-olds Kai (Yokohama Ryusei) and Akimi (Hirose Suzu) recognize a kindred spirit in each other at first sight. Sharing the wound of imperfect families and the island’s picturesque scenery, the two become soulmates who fill the voids in each other’s hearts. While Kai pursues his dream as a manga writer to create a new narrative for his life, Akimi decides to remain on the island and shoulder the burden of her family, placing the two on seperate paths. You, Like a Star is a drama that observes their 15-year journey of love across time. The film preserves the enduring emotion of love that defies the passage of time, stirring delicate and quiet ripples. The innocent face of someone who shared a chapter of one’s life becomes etched deep within the heart, turning into a luminous sentence that guides one’s destiny. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Nagira Yuu.
Born in 1986. Fujii graduated from the Department of Cinema, College of Art, Nihon University, and in 2010 founded the film collective ‘BABEL LABEL.’ He made his directorial debut with Oh! Father (2014), based on the novel by Kotaro Isaka, and his 2019 film The Journalist won six Japan Academy Film Prizes, including three top awards. His other directorial works include The Family (2021), The Last 10 Years (2022), and 18×2: Beyond Youthful Days (2024).
