The architect John and his wife Laura have a happy family until their daughter drowns in an accident, leaving Laura deep in grief. John goes to Venice to restore a church and takes his wife along to take her mind off things. Laura meets two elderly women; the blind one claims to be a medium who can see their dead daughter. The old woman warns that John will be in danger if he stays in Venice, but he takes no notice. Soon their son is hurt and Laura hurries home; John nearly falls to his death at work. When he has collected himself, he is shocked to see Laura still in the company of the two old women…
On its release the film stood apart for its pioneering, ahead-of-its-time editing; its experimental cross-cutting and compositions that clash warm and cold colours are revered by film lovers. Pino Donaggio’s superb score gives the film a plaintive mood beyond its sombre ground.
