In 1617, Spanish friar Padre Enciso rules an island in Las Islas Filipinas with unrelenting toughness and insatiable libido, using Christianity to justify his cruelty. After converting most of the indigenous Malay population, he continues building a church that has caused suffering and deaths for more than a decade. He sends his truant and juvenile son, Dungwen, to transport marble for its altar across 50 kilometers of dangerous forest, where the brutal marauder Baribari threaten the expedition. Meanwhile, healer Babayeng Intimatandog preserves Malay animist traditions and defies Enciso's theocratic rule. He must act decisively to stop her.
