The original work by Aramata Hiroshi was turned into a movie by director Jissoji Akio. The production cost was an unprecedented 1.8 billion yen at the time, causing quite a stir. Shimada Kyusaku's intense portrayal of the demon Kato Yasunori is a character that still sticks in people's minds even about 40 years later.
Jissoji's distinctive directing style, marked by unconventional camera angles and moving shots, was praised as "Jissoji Magic". His film Mujo (1970) won the Grand Prix at the Locarno International Film Festival.
