Women Make Waves International Film Festival 2026

The internet once created boundless possibilities for democracy, yet capitalism transformed everything. Our preferences became the fuel for algorithms, while algorithms erected an invisible boundary, an echo chamber, isolating individuals from the world. Totalitarianism swooped in to appropriate the language of democracy and portray the freedom to embrace diversity as a tool of polarization, using mistrust between different communities to divide us. Therefore, in such moments, a film festival marked with boundaries can offer the foundation of crossing borders. This year WMWIFF’s theme “Into the Drift” takes wandering, action and crossover as its key concepts, reminding us that the ways we exist across different dimensions are themselves rebellious gestures capable of shaking the confined society. In this year’s programs, filmmakers present diverse and fearless forms of resistance, reshaping the way we see the world. The “Master in Focus” program features Sarah Maldoror, whose poetic cinematic language of anticolonialism reminds us of the necessary rebellion in history and daily life. The “Wandering Woman” program redefines self-existence through body movement. The “Radical Bodies” program combines physical transformation and formal experimentation to depict the evolving concept of gender in films, while the presentation of Meriem Bennani’s works and the guest-curated program by Normal Screen broaden the visual horizons and the frontier of spectatorship. Moreover, the “Cinemini” and “Taiwan Competition” programs give filmmakers a platform to exert their creative energy, showing us the imagination to think outside the box and the courage to deconstruct established orders. The emotional power of films is the antidote to indifference; the practice of films is a manifestation of freedom in motion. May films stay Into the Drift, for whenever light and shadow flicker across the screen, the boundaries begin to tremble. The Chairperson of the 33rd Women Make Waves Int’l Film Festival, Taiwan
