Ju-young is preparing to move from a ghost town undergoing redevelopment, documenting the neighborhood whenever she can. One day, she discovers a rock in the home of a stranger, in a neighborhood scattered with rocks all around - a rock that is said to have been left behind by his father. Ju-young’s father disappeared ten years ago. Her mother left her even earlier. Yoon Juyoung layers the act of moving from one house to another over the process of resetting her present life by retracing memories of the past. While packing her belongings, she encounters her mother and asks why she did what she did back then; as she clears out her new place before moving in, she reunites with her long estranged father. Moving through four chapters, simply and firmly titled Rock, Body, Sound, and Breath, Yoon squarely confronts her own memories, oblivion, violence, and the ways of survival. In terms of temperature, Soundweave is awfully cold at times and surprisingly hot at others. This is a bold, ambitious feature debut from Yoon Ju-young, who works across painting, video, and performance.
Yoon graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University and completed Werner Herzog′s Rogue Film School. She works across painting, video, and performance, and was selected in the ‘Recommended Artists’ section of Platform in KIMUSA, an international contemporary art exhibition organized by the Art Sonje Center. Her short film Mansheia (2011) was selected as the opening film for the Seoul International New Media Festival (NEMAF), and Knot (2015) was screened at the Indie-Doc Festival. Soundweave is her first feature-length documentary.
